1) The event sold out! That's NOT a shocker to me. I felt it was perfectly timed with the ESPN XGames. What a great way for Group Y to celebrate their 30th event!

The ESPN X-Games Just Got Cooler!

Yes, the ESPN X-Games are going to happen towards the end of July. But, Group Y network (http://groupynetwork.com/) is having their 3oth event at the X-Games. It's called the Action Sports Conference. It's being held on 7/30.

Spotlight on Lisa Hoyle

Lisa Hoyle is Marketing Manager for the ESPN X-Games. I also consider Lisa Hoyle to be a friend and a mentor.

I first met Lisa at the US Open of Surfing (I think it was last year lol). The X-Games booth is an integral part of the US Open of Surfing because of the sheer number of fans, who love the X-Games. Anywho, I saw that Lisa needed some pens. I gave her the stash of pens that I always carry as I filled out a contest entry form.

Lisa told me to wait because she wanted to give me something. I wasn't really expecting anything in return. She gave me one of the skateboard decks that the ESPN X-Games sells online and at the games. I was so happy! I knew I'd be able to do something great with the skateboard (and have been getting it signed by as many athletes as I can to give it away for The Inaugural Whitty Tribute Raffle).

This story will always be a reminder of what true proessionalism is: treat others how you wish to be treated!

The Inaugural Whitty Tribute Raffle 2009

The Inaugural Whitty Tribute Raffle 2009 is about to begin! This is my personal tribute to a great man and friend, Mike Whitmarsh (aka "Whitty"). Whitty was well loved by his family, friends and former competitors on the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP Tour).

Beach volleyball is very much a family oriented sport where fans can interact with their favorite players. In February 2009, our sport lost an icon, Whitty.

I have been a fan of the sport of beach volleyball since 1989.

During the San Diego event in 1993, I unknowingly sat next to Grandma Whitmarsh. She heard me cheering for Mike and struck up a conversation. A friendship was born. My frienship with Grandma Whitmarsh enabled me to get my fan letter from Whitty (This was after he won the silver medal at the inaugural beach vollyball Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996).

Mike's career highlights include 28 victories, the above mentioned silver medal, numerous accolades while playing on the AVP Tour and winning over $1.6 million dollars in prize money. Prior to playing volleyball, Mike successfuly played basketball in the NBA and college (University of San Diego).

I choose to celebrate his life and legacy with the Inaugural Whitty Tribute Raffle 2009. I am raffling various items to benefit:

1) the Jaden and Kendall Whitmarsh college fund

2) to send future beach volleyball players to Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos' beach volleyball camp.



My goals:

1) For Jaden and Kendall to know what kind of impact their father had on his fans

2) to raise money for the above mentioned causes

3) to inspire people as many people as possible to become involved in our cause

"Street Dreams" Delivers...

Last night at the Lido Theater, I attended a showing of "Street Dreams" as a part of the Newport Beach Film Festival. Rob Dyrdek, Ryan Sheckler, Terry Kennedy, Paul Rodriguez and Ryan Dunn were in attendance to a sold out crowd, who wanted to take photos and sought out autographs from the skateboarders. This movie stars Dyrdek, Sheckler, Kennedy, Rodriguez, Dunn, Adam Wylie, C.C. Sheffield and others in a skateboard drama. The movie tugged at my emotions, showed great skateboarding and had some funny moments.

After the viewing of the movie, there was a Q& A session with the cast and crew. The Q&A session was worth staying for as the members of the cast and crew recalled some hilarious antics behind the scenes.

According to an OC Register blog, the movie will be released on June 12th.

FYI, Dyrdek spent $2 million dollars of his own money and co-wrote the script. Here is Dyrdek's summary about the movie (courtesy of IMDB.com): "This story is based where the skateboard culture is the most foreign, the Midwest. Derrick Cabrera, like all skaters, has a dream of being sponsored and one day going pro. He is an up and coming skater with all the talent but has the world against him. Parents, friends and schoolmates can't understand how Derrick has so much passion for something that has no future in their eyes. His crew of friends that are skaters is the only place he is truly accepted. But, as he gets better and better, the skater he looked up to the most becomes his worst enemy. In the sport of skateboarding a single trick that has never been done or conceived can bring you stardom in an instant. Derrick has that trick, if only he can make it. As he attempts to make this trick he is faced with skateproofing, a jealous friend and cops who have it in for him. Derrick finally gets arrested for skating on private property. After that his parents lay down the law and try to force him to quit skateboarding. Adding insult to injury, his girlfriend forces an ultimatum on him as well: "The skateboard or life with her." At that point, Derrick gives up everything and runs away with his friends to the Tampa Am contest in Florida. This is a weekend that can turn an unknown skateboarder into a future star. He sees it as his only shot to make it in skateboarding. Derrick's rivalry comes to a head in Florida when his crew of friends abandons him because of his jealous mentor. A top amateur's sister rescues Derrick by giving him a place to stay and convincing him to believe in himself. With all the world of skateboarding watching, Derrick finally makes the trick that shocks the entire skate world and instantly thrusts him into the spotlight. His dream of being sponsored has come true."
